River Dynamics: Flow, Floods, and Form

The Public Outreach Committee of NeFSMA will collaborate with guests at Kiewit Luminarium to provide an engaging educational experience focused on water resources. This initiative, tailored for both children and adults, aims to highlight the vital role rivers play in our environment and history.

This program will cover essential topics related to river dynamics, including:

  • River characteristics
  • Flooding and floodplain management
  • Stormwater management
  • The historical significance of rivers in westward migration

Since the Luminarium is located on the bank of the Missouri River and in close proximity to the Platte River as well the Papillion Creek Watershed, the NeFSMA team will stationed at the interactive Stream Table where guests can ask questions regarding rivers and streams, and learn about mobile streambeds from the Platte River and nonmobile systems from the Missouri River and Papillion Creek.

Nebraska’s regional environment contains a rich history of cohabitating with water, and the NeFSMA team will be available to discuss stormwater management, levees, retention dams, detention basins, and flood risk adaptive measures such as building elevation, dry floodproofing, and wet floodproofing.
