Chemistry in Action!

Join us as Chemistry Professor Dr. Rachel Willand-Charnley leads two fascinating chemistry demonstrations:

Molecular Stopwatch: How do you measure the rate of a reaction that is invisible and extremely fast? The Molecular Stopwatch experiment uses a molecule, acting as a stopwatch, to measure the rate of invisible reactions resulting in extraordinary color changing experiments.

Elephant Toothpaste: Foam so big it’s gotta be for an elephant. The elephant toothpaste experiment teaches basic chemical principles, exothermic processes for example, when simple solutions are mixed producing larger than life foam.

About Dr. Willand-Charnley
Dr. Willand-Charnley is a Nebraska native who earned their Ph.D in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln before joining the lab of Nobel Laureate Carolyn Bertozzi at Stanford University as an NIGMS Institutional Research and Career Development Award postdoctoral fellow.

In addition to leading an interdisciplinary research program at South Dakota State University, they run an outreach program, Scientists-at-Large. The aim of Scientists-at-Large is to demystify science, harnessing inherent curiosity and interest in learning about how things work through hands-on experiments. Demonstrations will include chemistry that centers around kinetics and solubility, like the Radical Clock!
